Sending a basic chat message is simple. You only need to type your message into the chat input area and then press Enter.
Be noted that any player assigned a Character (from the N Journal tab) is able to select via drop-down to talk as themselves (their registered login name) or as their assigned character. You will be able to find this drop-down menu directly below the chat text box.
If the option of enabling chat avatars is checked off in the Y My Settings Tab on the Sidebar, the mini icon is going to display to the left of the chat entries. The icon will be able to change depending on whether a user is chatting as themselves or as a player assigned character.

Chat Commands in Roll20
If you want to whisper in Roll20, easily you are able to type /w and the name you want to engage via whisper. Remember that there is a tab-auto-complete function for names to speed this process.
- /w Robert how come you had to cast a magic missile?
- /w Jhon Where are the Cheetos?!
You are able to put the name of a character or player in quotation marks, if the name contains spaces.
- /w “Robert, Sorcerer of Light” You did not say you cast it, so you didn’t, ok?!
- /w “John Smith” Where is the Mountain Dew?!
For note: In Roll20, whispering to a Character is going to send the message to all players listed in the controlled by field, that possibly include the GM. This reality is frequently used to create an in-character language character for the Campaign setting languages like Orcish, Elvish, Dwarven, etc. The Language-character will be able to be whispered to for only players who have characters that understand the language.
Rolls to GM
If you want to whisper directly to the GM, simply you are able to type /w gm. Also, you are able to do a roll which only you and the GM can view, with /gmroll 1d20+5.
- /w gm I’m attacking the darkness!
- /gmroll 2d6+3
Currently, only GM whispers are retained in the Chat Archive. They are only shown to the GM. A player or the GM will be able to whisper to themselves by using the /w or /w gm commands where applicable.
If you want to emote, simply you are able to type /em and whatever action you wish stated. Be noted that you are going to emote by whatever you are currently speaking as (player or character). For your information, emotes are formatted as center aligned, italicized, bold, and set in an orange font and highlight. With the new update, the font has been changed to brown for better visibility, no longer is orange.
- /em takes out one of his throwing swords and brandishes it threateningly.

Out of Character (/ooc)
When you want to state something while Out of Character, just type /ooc or /o and whatever you want to say. Remember that Out of Character entries will appear as the player constantly rather than the character you have chosen in the Speaking As drop-down.
- /ooc I could really utilize another Red Bull now.
- Riley D.: I could really utilize another Red Bull now.
Escape Text (`)
If you put a back tick at the beginning of a command chat, it will not parse anything regarding it. It is going to output your text directly. Probably, this be useful for sharing macros with others while in the game.
Talk to Myself (/talktomyself)
If you want to turn off your chat display for all others, including the GM and the chat archive recording, simply you are able to use /talktomyself or /talktomyself on. Please use /talktomyself again or use /talktomyself off for disabling.
For note: the /talktomyself command and what you wish to say must be on different lines. You will not be able to use it in the same macro because what you want to keep hidden. Having a separate macro to toggle the talktomyself state, and then utilize your other macros which actually do what you wish.
This is my bad secret plan to steal the jewelry from my party!
Note: API commands (a Pro subscription feature) will not be executed once /talktomyself is on.
Special Effects (/fx)
The Special Effects command is able to be used to make visual effects. It has the syntax like below:
/fx <Type>-<Color> <Source ID> [<Target ID>]
- Type can be: beam, bubbling, burn, burst, bomb, breath, explode, missile, nova, splatter, glow.
- Color can be: blood, charm, acid, death, holy, magic, slime, fire, frost, smoke, water.
- Source ID is the id of a token that is the point of origin of an effect.
- Target ID is the id of a token that is the point where the effect is focused. It is only needed for directed effects and will be ignored by the area effects.

Also, the Special Effects command will be able to be used to invoke Custom FX. For custom effects, you are able to use the syntax below:
