In Call of Duty: Black Ops III, you’ll face hordes of zombies that will attack you in the map called Zombies Chronicles. Before you become their prey, you really need to kill them first. However, you’re also required to escape before finishing off the zombies.
In an effort to protect yourself from zombies, you’ll have to collect the Ice Staff, a weapon to destroy them. After finding it, you also need to upgrade it for long-range combat. Unfortunately, it’s not straightforward to do so since you have to solve the puzzle with the available codes.

Here’s a List of Ice Staff Codes You Need to Solve!
To upgrade the Ice Staff, you’ll have to complete at least three puzzles. To solve these puzzles, you should shoot the floating stones in the correct order based on the codes that you can see on the pillar. Well, this is the most difficult task of upgrading the Ice Staff, allowing you to decode a pillar and a series of floating stones.
Here’s a list of Ice Staff codes you need to solve!
1. Single Black Circle
The code is represented by an upside-down triangle above the vertical line.
2. Single Open Circle
The code is represented by an upside-down triangle.
3. Two Horizontal Circles (Both Black)
The code is represented by one upside-down triangle above the line and one upside-down triangle.
4. Two Vertical Black Circles

The code is represented by an upside-down triangle above a line, which is followed by an upside-down triangle above an “L.”

How to Upgrade the Ice Staff in Black Ops III: The Zombies Chronicles?
After you have the Ice Staff and want to upgrade it, as we’ve mentioned earlier, you need to complete three puzzles. For the first puzzle, you should go to the crazy place and find the icy place. After you’re there, you’ll locate six panels of rocks and ice floating above a portal.
Afterwards, you can see a huge wall with a printed design on it that shows the codes. Well, the printed design on the wall is such a clue for you to solve the puzzle. Then, you need to shoot the correct stone by decoding the wall print. A floating stone will immediately appear if you shoot the correct stone after.
It’s important to note that the recent code was RNG, but it changes in each and every game, so you really need a great skill to evaluate the puzzle. |
Once you have entered the correct order based on the game’s randomized code, you’ll need to find three tombstone locations and shoot them with a weapon—in addition to the Ice Staff.
-
- The first one can be found right by the soul chest behind Juggernog.
- The second one is exactly behind it, inside one of the giant’s footprints. After this, you can see it next to a body that is impaled on a stake just on the edge of the trench.
- The third and final one can be found near the tank station. To get it, you need to hop up on the tank and search for the broken robot outside the boundaries. Well, it’s located to the left of the downed robot.
After that, you have to go back to the mound and go underground. Here, you can rotate the giant rings on the amplification device using the handles around the stairs. Make sure to line them up, so all of them are blue to match the ice staff.
Now, you can go to the bottom and look inside the middle of the rings. Then, shoot the floating blue wall with the ice staff. After that, you have to go back to the crazy place and go to the Ice Staff holder and place it inside.
You can now kill zombies nearby to charge the staff to its full power. After approximately 25 zombies, your staff will be charged, and you can pick it up. Congratulations! You now have the Ice Staff that has fully been upgraded.
How to Obtain the Ice Staff in Black Ops III?
In Origins, the Ice Staff is visually one of the best weapons for instantly freezing. If you watch them shatter, it’ll be more than satisfying. However, the basic version of the Ice Staff has the inherent disadvantage of freezing enemies that will finally block your escape route when you are surrounded by entire hordes.
If you upgrade the Ice Staff, it can be mentioned as the best staff in the game, just simply because it is a charged attack that causes a massive blizzard that sucks in nearby enemies. This attack is the perfect high-revving ally and also makes a fantastic campsite support weapon.
Here’s how to get the Ice Staff!
To get the Ice Staff, you will need three parts: a colored disc, a black disc, and the gramophone, just like other staffs in Origins. Parts of the Ice Staff, the blue disc and gramophone should be used to open the Blue portal (Ice Portal).
Step 1: Find the Blue Disc
First, you need to find the blue disc that can be found inside the building next to Generator 2. Either on the weapon box shelf, on the shelf next to the rear door, or on the front table.
Step 2: Find the Parts of the Ice Staff
Keep in mind that parts of the Ice Staff have no set locations; they instead have specific requirements. To get it, you have to wait until it is snowing. Then, you need to dig up the rubble piles on the floor. It usually involves opening up every part of the map and exhausting every dig until you get to all three.
Step 3: Find the Black Disc
Basically, a black disc is used in combination with the gramophone to open the lower level of the excavation site. It is usually found in one of three locations:
-
- On a box—at the bottom of the walkway to the excavation site (Generator 2 Side).
- On a box—the opposite side of the excavation site, near the entrance to the church.
- top of the excavation site—in a wheelbarrow beside PaP.
Step 4: Find the Gramophone
You can find Gramophone inside the central excavation site—one level down on the floor. You need to put the Gramophone on the table to unlock the secret sublevel with the Staff statue. The best trick to getting the gramophone is to always open the bottom section of the excavation site and pick it up as soon as possible, so you do not need to come back for it later.
After all parts of the Ice Staff are collected, you need to go to Generator 6 (back of the church). You can then go down the tunnel, put the gramophone on the table, and wait for the blur portal to build. Now, you can head into the crazy place and then get the crystal from the blue pedestal. After that, you need to leave the place by rebuilding the blue portal.
Last, you need to head back to the central excavation site. Then, go to the bottom level and build the staff with the statue. Okay, that’s how to get the ice staff. Well, obtaining the Ice Staff is pretty straightforward, isn’t it?
