Designs are custom-made patterns of 32×32 pixels which can be made in each game through an editing interface. The created design will be applied to clothing, hats, carpeting, umbrellas, and wallpaper. Also, designs can be placed as paintings. In Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, designs are able to be used to customize furniture. You have to be friends with Sable in the latter game to unlock a lot of pre-made designs which can be applied to particular furniture.
Designs are able to be shown in the Able Sisters where the villagers are able to start wearing them, and also other players may copy designs for themselves. You have to know that Animal Crossing: New Leaf increased the design limit to ten designs. Mabel will store 72 designs. While in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it allows up to 90 designs and 90 pro-designs. Here, the players are able to upload up to 130 of their designs to share with other players.
Getting and Sharing Custom Design Slots in Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Animal Crossing: New Leaf can generate QR codes to get and share custom designs. To unlock the feature in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, first you have to befriend Sable who will bring in a new sewing machine which will allow them to make and read QR codes. In Happy Home Designer, you are going to see the machine in the upstairs of Nook’s Homes after you complete the lesson “Even More Designs” in exchange for five coins. Need to know that QR codes are stored as images on the SD card inserted into the Nintendo 3DS. Normal designs use one QR code, however pro designs consist of four separate codes. After the codes have been scanned, a slot should be chosen for the design to be saved to.
More Custom Design Slots are Finally Coming to ACNH
A long requested wish from the players of Animal Crossing: New Horizons has finally been fulfilled by Nintendo, after almost a full year of demands. In the latest update released on March 18th, it is going to be possible to expand the Custom Design app’s design slot capacity by another 50 new slots in each of the Normal and Pro modes.
You will be able to unlock this design slot expansion by doubling your possible pattern storage by buying the new Custom Design Pro Editor + item at the Nook Stop Terminal in Resident Services for 2,000 Nook Miles. Since the game’s launch back in March last year, we have heard from Animal Crossing: New Horizons players regarding the restrictive limit of only 50 slots. Therefore, this is sure to please lots of people.
Besides expanding your available design slots, the Custom Design Pro Editor also introduces 4 new types of designs you are able to make expanding your options. These expanded Custom PRO Design choices include the patterns on an umbrella, a flag, a Japanese uchiwa fan, and a photo standee. Several of those may be familiar to the players of Animal Crossing: New Leaf. One more upgrade will be made available at the Nook Stop Terminal named the Custom Designs Portal. By buying this item for 300 Nook Miles, the Custom Design Portal from the Able Sisters shop is going to become available as another app on your NookPhone.
This is an important new feature because it allows the players to access the portal and download new custom designs, even when the Able Sisters store is closed due to hours of the day. Between the doubling of available design slots, the new ways to feature designs with these new options, and the new NookPhone feature, we are really excited to see everything the Animal Crossing: New Horizons community makes right now. As part of the announcement, Nintendo also took the time to share a nice statistic. There are over 12 million Custom Designs have uploaded to the Custom Design Portal so far since it launched in the last year.
Getting and Sharing Custom Designs in ACNH
There are some methods to get custom designs from the web onto your ACNH island. Please be careful that designs you upload are marked with “no edit” icon, meaning you cannot edit them.
One of methods to get custom designs is by using QR Code. If you have an excellent design from Animal Crossing: New Leaf which you want to import into Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you need the old design’s QR code. In alternative, there are some sites that will allow you to make your masterpiece on your choice browser or upload any photo to convert into a custom design that explains how memes are making their ways on to villagers’ walls with shocking accuracy. Please be careful, these only work for normal designs. But, excellence will flow forth.

- Get Nintendo Switch App, then set up NookLink
Firstly, you have to download the Nintendo Switch App onto your phone. Do not worry as it is free. Also, it has many features for the game such as allowing you to chat with your beloved friends by using your phone’s keyboard. When you open the Animal Crossing: New Horizons features for the first time, then you are going to be asked to set up NookLink. You have to press the [-] button on the opening screen of ACNH. It will bring you to the settings menu. - Scan a QR Code from online
After that, you are able to go back into the Nintendo Switch App. You have to open that New Horizons widget, and go to Designs. Next, you are going to be invited to scan a QR code. Here, you need to point your phone at your monitor. - Go to your NookPhone in game
The last step, you are able to go to the Custom Designs app on your NookPhone. Afterwards, choose an empty slot, and press the [+] button to download the design you uploaded to NookLink.
