In a similar way to Red Dead Redemption focusing on Jack for its last mission, where Jack becomes a playable character, RDR 2 switches to the perspective of John Marston for its final hours.

The RDR2 epilogue sees John Marston striving to learn how to live a normal life. John Marston gets a job as a farmhand and learns to become less aggressive. Even John Marston starts using the journal of RDR2’s Arthur Morgan to write his entries. The players will be able to see John Marston begin to grow into the man as he is in Red Dead Redemption, it is not until the RDR2 epilogue where they see John Marston calm and reevaluate what is really crucial to him in his life. The game shows how John Marston changes and how his relationship with his wife Abigail and Jack Marston blossoms.
Outside of the focus on John Marston, the storylines of Charles Smith and Sadie Adler get several closure. Charles Smith and Sadie Adler are a big help in allowing John Marston to get everything he needs for his ranch. Also, Sadie Adler gets information about where Micah and Dutch are. This leads John Marston to a final confrontation with the 2 snakes, resulting in several closure with Micah. Charles Smith assists John Marston and Sadie Adler discover Dutch before leaving the county and going to Canada to start a new life. Other side characters of the Van Der Linde gang can be found around the map. Mary-Beth, Tilly and Pearson are all making their own legal lives once departing from the gang.
