In PlayStation 4, the Safe Mode is designed to assist the users fix some issues by rebuilding the console storage database, ‘hard’ resetting the console to its factory settings or changing your resolution. Before you run Safe Mode, you may need to back up your data to a USB drive or Cloud Storage, as Safe Mode options will cause loss of your data.
Furthermore, the Safe Mode is run to get used as a diagnostic tool to fix software issues or work through issues without interference from the third-party software. Some PS4 users get stuck on Safe Mode, so they cannot get out of this mode. As a result, they cannot play or resume playing games.
Restarting your PS4 in Safe Mode is a solution that you can get out of Safe Mode. To restart your PS4 in safe mode, you may take some extra ways. So, here’s the step-by-step to restart your PS4 in safe mode!

- First, you need to turn your console off by pressing the power button for about 3 seconds. Then, your PS4 will automatically power off, after blinking a few times.
- Second, you have to press and hold the power button on your console. Make sure to release your finger only after the second beep sound. It will take about 7 seconds.
- Third, your PS4 will start in Safe Mode. You should ensure your controller is connected to the console. You can then press your PS4 button.
- Fourth, after your PS4 boots up in Safe Mode, you will see eight options to appear on your screen. Here they are:
| 1. Restart: This option will let your PS4 boot normally (if possible). This is the fastest and easiest way to get ou of Safe Mode. |
| 2. Change Resolution: This option allows you to switch the display resolution to 480p after the console restarts. It may help you resolve screen issues. |
| 3. Update System Software: This option allows you update your console’s software vis a direct download, a disc or a USB drive. |
| 4. Restore Default Settings: This option allows you to reset your PS4 to its factory settings, without removing app, games or other data. |
| 5. Rebuild Database: This option allows you to add all your content to a new database on the system that can resolve system feature issues like a problem if an app icon does not appear once you have removed the app. |
| 6. Initialize PS4: This option allows you to reset your console to its original settings and deletes all user settings and data. |
| 7. Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software): This option allows you to remove your console’s firmware and remove all user data and settings. |
| 8. Set HDCP Mode: This option is only for PS4 Pro where allows you to apply to images that do not appear on 4K TVs which are not compatible with HDCP 2.2. However, this option allows you to select HDCP 1.40 to see images that otherwise will not appear on your TV. |

If you still get stuck in Safe Mode, though you have restarted your PS4, you may need to take some other solutions that may help you to fix your problem. There are three alternatives that you can take to get out of Safe Mode. Here they are:
Alternative 1: Ensure there are no power issues
To start this way, you can check to ensure all of the cables including your HDMI and USB connections are working appropriately. To do so, you can try unplugging PS4’s power cord and plugging it back in.
You also need to unplug the HDMI cord and switch which end is plugged into the PS4 and which end is plugged into the TV. If you find the broken cable, you may need to replace it.
Alternative 2: Rebuild corrupted files
If the alternative 1 cannot solve your issue, you can try to rebuild the corrupted files. To do so, you can choose option 5 on the Safe Mode menu that says ‘Rebuild Database’ and then press ‘X’.
This way will create a new database for your PS4 without affecting any save data. Keep in mind, it will take a while to rebuild your PS4. When it is done, you can try to restart your PS4.
Alternative 3: Update your PS4’s software
The last alternative, you may try to update your PS4’s software from the Safe Menu. To do so, you can try to press ‘X’ to choose the ‘Update System Software’ option.
