How to Check Integrated Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) in Your Mac

Video cards known as GPUs (or GPUs) are often used to display graphics that can be integrated on a Mac screen or on separate disks. GPU sets the speed for displaying graphics on your Mac in games and other applications. Here’s how to find out what GPU your Mac has.

If you only use it to browse computers or use office software and desktop applications, you no longer need to know the GPU. It is responsible for the part of the computer that appears on the monitor.

But gamers or anyone else is doing something that speeds up GPU 3D rendering, video encoding and more, much more than GPU. These people need to use more GPUs, so let’s take a look around.


The easiest way to understand GPU functionality is to talk about video games. In the game we can see complex and detailed models of computer people, landscapes or 3B objects. Thanks to GPU, everything we see happens.

Video games are complex activities that require a lot of mathematical calculations performed in parallel to display an image on the screen. The GPU is specifically designed to handle graphical information including geometry, color, color and texture in images. Also, it is designed to store a lot of data that enters RAM, screen buffer, GPU and video data on the screen.

What the GPU does?

The GPU takes all the necessary instructions from the processor to take a picture on the screen and then executes it. The process of moving from command to finished image is called processing line or graphical pipeline.

The primary unit to start creating 3B graphics is polygon. Or rather, a triangle. Almost everything you see in a typical video game starts with a large triangle collection. Other shapes can be used but most are triangles.

For everyone else, integrated graphics are fine. No need to purchase a graphics card for video streaming, basic web gaming, or basic photo editing. Make sure your processor actually has an integrated GPU. Otherwise, you might get frustrated trying to load a new desktop assembly.

Checking steps

First tap on the Apple menu in the top left corner of the screen and select About This Mac.

In the “About this Mac” window that opens, you’ll see somewhat different information about an Intel-based Mac or an Apple Silicon Mac (for example, the M1 chip).

If you have an Intel based Mac, you can see a summary of the features of a Mac with a graphics card or card installed on your Mac and search for information in the graphics section of the list. This example uses a 1536MB Intel HD Graphics 6000 GPU.

If you’re using a Mac with Apple Silicon (for example, the “M1” chip), you’ll only see a list of “Chips” without a special line for “graphics”. This is because the GPU and CPU are integrated with the M1 chip. In this case, the Apple M1 is technically both the CPU and GPU of the Mac model.

On an Intel or Apple Silicon Mac, you can see detailed information about the graphics hardware by clicking the System Report button in the window about this Mac.

In the “System Information” application that appears, expand the “Hardware” section of the sidebar and click the “Graphics/Displays” button. For more information about the GPU you use on your Mac, see the Chipset Model section, for example, an Intel Mac with a single Intel HD Graphics 6000 GPU.

Available under the GPU chipset model on Apple Silicon Mac computers. As mentioned above, the CPU and GPU are the same chips as the Apple M1 in this case.
