Rayquaza is a dual type Legendary Pokemon, Dragon and Flying type. This is also known as the mascot of Pokemon Emerald as a member of the Weather Trio, as the master trio along with Kyogre and Groudon. Rayquaza is one of the Pokemon types which is able to Mega Evolve and hold an item at the same time.
Rayquaza is also known as one of the strongest Pokemon in the franchise. However, which makes Rayquaza strongest is because it has a special connection to the process of Mega Evolution. It’s revealed to canonically be the first Pokemon to have undergone Mega Evolution.
In Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Rayquaza is the only such form which does not require a Mega Stone before its transformation. Moreover, it’s an atmospheric beast in the Sky High Pokemon which spends the majority of its time flying above the clouds in the ozone layer. Rayquaza also spawn as a meteor to those on the ground.

Rayquaza’s Ability
Coming in dual-type, Dragon and Flying, of course, Rayquaza has a great ability in the game. The Rayquaza’s ability is Air Lock which means when this Pokemon is active, the effects or the weather conditions are disabled.
Here’s for Air Lock effects:
-
- In battle
When Rayquaza with Air Lock ability is in battle, all effects of weather are negated although the weather itself still appears.
-
- Generation V
When Rayquaza with Air Lock is brought out, the message of “The effects of weather disappears’ ‘ will be displayed once the ability is announced.
-
- Generation VI
During heavy rain, harsh sunlight and strong winds, even if Rayquaza is negating the effects of weather with Air Lock, Rain Dance, the moves Sunny Day, Hail and also Sandstrom can still fail if used. Then, the Ability Drizzle, Drought, Snow Warning, and Sand Stream will still fail to activate. Somehow, all other effects of those weather conditions are negated by Air Lock.
-
- Outside of battle
Air Lock ability will not have effect when outside of battle.
Rayquaza’s Type Moves
When Rayquaza turns into Mega Rayquaza, of course it will know Dragon Ascent. Well, Dragon Ascent here is a damage-dealing Flying type-move which is introduced in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Of course, Dragon Ascent is the signature move of Rayquaza.
Here’s for Dragon Ascent effect:
Dragon Ascent will deal damage and then lowers the user’s Defense stat and Special Defense stat by one stage each.
In Generation VI and VII, the players are allowed to Mega Evolve any Rayquaza which knows Dragon Ascent. In this case, if it’s holding a Z-Crystal or knows the move only through Mimic, of course Rayquaza won’t Mega Evolve. While, In Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Rayquaza cannot Mega Evolve until it in the Delta Episode has been caught.
In the game data of Pokemon X and Y, Dragon Ascent does not exist. For the result, a Pokemon which knows Dragon Ascent cannot be exchanged from Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire to Pokemon X and Y. Then, if a Pokemon in Pokemon Bank knows the move, it cannot be withdrawn in Pokemon X and Y. Afterwards, a Pokemon should forget Dragon Ascent in order to be transferred to Pokemon X and Y.
In Generation VIII, Dragon Ascent no longer activates the Mega Evolution.
