What happened with Cody Rhodes and AEW (All Elite Wrestling)? That seems to be the big question everyone is asking. Eventually, like all things do, it came down to money. Well, let us discuss more details about that information here.
What Happened to Cody Rhodes AEW?
Based on the research, Cody Rhodes and AEW President Tony Khan hit a snag in negotiations for Cody Rhodes’ new deal over pay. That caused the end of their discussions and within AEW among several wrestlers, the departure had at least been suspected. ESPN’s Mike Coppinger reported that Cody Rhodes informed Tony Khan that he was leaving AEW (All Elite Wrestling). Until that point, all expectations had been that Cody Rhodes and Brandi Rhodes would be remaining with the company as there had been plans for them to be at upcoming Dynamite tapings.
There are several people who believe this means Rhodes will be signing with WWE. WWE sources confirmed that they have had contact with Cody Rhodes dating back to his AEW deal expiring at the end of 2021. There is no official word that Cody Rhodes has signed with the company. If he chooses to do that, then he would be cleared to appear on WWE TV soon. We get information that Cody Rhodes has a long relationship with John Laurinaitis, who first signed him to a WWE developmental deal back in 2006.
There was an excitement among several who work in WWE regarding the potential of Cody Rhodes coming in as a talent. While others noted that from a strategic standpoint, Cody Rhodes would be the first AEW to WWE jump who also had intimate knowledge of how the company ran and operated given his position as an EVP. Cody Rhodes was not on the company’s internal talent roster, however the signing, from WWE’s perspective, is expected to happen. Even one source believed that Cody Rhodes could be at the WWE Performance Center as early as this weekend in preparation for a return.
WWE is in a position where they require fresh talent and obvious, WWE could present Cody Rhodes as a big star as the first “jump” from AEW to make waves and also make the perception that the tide is turning against AEW and back towards WWE, same with how Sean Waltman was presented after leaving WCW during the Monday Night War. One WWE source noted that if they pushed Cody Rhodes and gave him a big Wrestlemania match, the message to all the other AEW stars is that this would be an example of how they would be treated if they made their way to WWE.
Probably, WWE casts Cody Rhodes back into a mid-card “Stardust” position, placing him back into the role Cody Rhodes had all those years ago which made him ask out of his WWE deal back in the year of 2016. When you think about that, Cody Rhodes now is in a situation same with John Morrison in that they each made a great body of work outside of WWE. In the case of John Morrison, when he decided to return to the company, unfortunately he was slotted right back into the mid-card where he only stayed. There was no growth of his character at all from where he was when he first left the company.
About AEW (All Elite Wrestling)
All Elite Wrestling or AEW is an American professional wrestling promotion based in Jacksonville (Florida). This is considered as the second largest wrestling promotion in the United States behind WWE. For your information, AEW (All Elite Wrestling) is owned by Shahid Khan and his son Tony Khan, who founded the company in the year of 2019; in-ring performers Cody Rhodes, Nick Jackson, Kenny Omega, and Brandi Rhodes also serve as the company executives. Its headquarters are located at TIAA Bank Field, the home stadium of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, a team owned by Shahid Khan too.
Based on the research, since October 2, 2019, AEW (All Elite Wrestling) has produced a two-hour weekly television show called AEW Dynamite, airing live on TBS in the United States. Originally, the show aired on TBS’s sister channel, TNT, from October 2019 to December 2021. Also, it airs another weekly television program on TNT, AEW Rampage, since August 10, 2021, together with two YouTube-exclusive shows: AEW Dark and AEW Dark: Elevation. CBS Sports described AEW (All Elite Wrestling) as the first company with major financial backing to take a swing at beginning to compete with WWE on a major level in almost two decades.
History of AEW (All Elite Wrestling)
In May 2017, Dave Meltzer made a statement that the American professional wrestling promotion Ring of Honor (ROH) could not sell 10,000 tickets for a wrestling event. The statement was responded to by professional wrestlers named Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks, who were later top stars signed to Ring of Honor (ROH). In September 2018, they promoted and held an independent professional wrestling event named All In, featuring the wrestlers from Ring of Honor (ROH) as well as other promotions.
That event sold out in 30 minutes and also had the largest audience in attendance for a professional wrestling show in the United States held by promoters not affiliated with WWE or WCW since 1993. We get information that the event was attended by 11,263 people. That event was acclaimed, and it led to much online speculation that Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks would expand their ambitions and make their professional wrestling promotion or do a second All In event. In December 2018, Cody Rhodes, The Young Bucks, and some other wrestlers left Ring of Honor (ROH). The announcement of AEW’s creation came at midnight Pacific Time on January 1, 2019, in an episode of Being the Elite. Also, it was announced in the episode was Double or Nothing, AEW’s inaugural event and sequel to All In.
