Clint Eastwood is always winning is life. The man, along with the company that manages the rights to his likeness called Garrapata, has won a the lawsuit against a CBD or cannabidiol seller. If you are so behind about this news and are curious about the details, check out everything below.
Basically, a Lithuanian company named Mediatonas UAB was accused of using the image of Clint Eastwood to sell CBD or cannabidiol products. To make it as he was the one that endorses the products and to bait the costumers, they even shared a fake interview with the actor.
Knowing that his name was used for something commercial without his concern, Clint Eastwood then filed two lawsuits in Lost Angeles federal court against three CBD manufacturers and marketers whose products were included in an online article that claims the actor as the endorser of the cannabidiol products last year. Aside from that, the original lawsuits also mentioned a total of 10 online retailers that allegedly manipulated the search results using the meta tags, as reported by the New York Times. In the first lawsuit, the representative of the actor showed the fake interview with an outlet that made up to be the Today Show. On top of that, they even included a photo of the actor from the last time he made an appearance on the NBC show. The links to buy the CBD items were included in the article.
Due to the fact that the publisher called Mediatonas UAB never bothered to give a response to a summons in March, U.S. District Court Judge named R. Gary Klausner decided to submit a default judgement. In the end, both Clint Eastwood and Garrapata won the lawsuits against Mediatonas UAB and they were awarded $6 million. Apart from that, they also received a total of $95,000 for the fees to pay the attorney. In addition to these things, there is a permanent injunction that bans the company from using his image in the future. However, Clint’s request for defamation claims was denied by the judge because according to him, an additional content is required to understand what CBD products are and the reason why the one like Clint Eastwood would not endorse a product that is based on marijuana. Klausner said that it is because the text was not libelous on its face.
Nevertheless, Clint Eastwood still happy with the court’s ruling and he believed that the judgment is like a strong message to the other online scammers who might have a desire to illegally use someone’s name and reputation to sell the products that they sell. His attorney, Jordan Susman, also named the case of his client as a call for everyone to not earn profits from his client’s name without getting permission. The guy said that as one of the public figures who has spent his life on screen for more than 60 years, Clint Eastwood has earned a reputation for honesty, integrity, hard work, and public service. He added that his client is willing to do the thing that is right and the thing that is fair. By fighting for his right means he is willing to confront the wrongdoing and ask for the responsibility of those who try to illegally earn some profits off his name, likeness, and goodwill.
The money he received from the case makes Clint Eastwood richer. The actor was reported to have an estimated net worth of more than $400 million as of October 2021.
