You might need a copy of your tax return information from a prior year. Fortunately, transcripts are free and they are available for the most current tax year after the IRS has processed the return. It is also possible for you to get them for the past three tax years. Apparently, the IRS can lend you a hand if you do not have your copy.
There are several ways to get a transcript, including order online, order by phone, and order by mail. For everyone who needs the real copy of your tax return, according to the official website of IRS, they are generally available for the current tax year and as far back as six years. The copy costs $50 each. If you want to request a copy of your tax return, you will have to complete and mail Form 4506. Here is the example of completing this form:

Completing these steps helps to protect your privacy. Once the IRS disclose your tax transcript to the third party listed on line 5a, the IRS has no control over what the third party does with the information.
