Are the PS3 Games also Compatible with PS5?

Since the PS4 games will be compatible with PS5, a lot of PS3 players also wonder whether or not the PS3 games will also be available on PS5. Reportedly, the PS3 games have begun showing up across the PlayStation 5 Store.

However, it triggers speculation that Sony will start making the games available for the players across the platform in the near future. As VGC stated, the PS5 recently supports backward compatibility on PS5 titles. However,  accessing the PS3 games will likely be performed via Sony’s PlayStation Now service.

At this moment, any PS3 games on the PS5 store similarly direct players to the PlayStation Now version of the game, such as Prince of Persia, Dead or Alive 5 and Bejeweled. As you can see at the PS5 Store, each game will have its own price tag, although buying them with this method is not available.

For more information, Sony has started removing PlayStation Now retail cards ahead of launching its new games service, codenamed Spartacus. It aims to combine PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now in an attempt to challenge the offering from Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass.

PlayStation Now was released in January 2014 and has to set the world on fire yet. This Sony’s service offers access to more than 800 games across PS3, PS4 and PS5, but only 300 of them can be downloaded, as the remaining should be streamed.

So far, there is nothing that explicitly suggests that Sony has found a new way to run PS1, PS2 or also PS3 games on PS5. However, that’s about the patent theirselves. We can say that Sony is not working on additional backwards compatibility for PS5.

Additionally, the patent was re-registered, but it is not new registration, just updated. The patent was originally filed in 2015, before the launch of the PS4 Pro, expanding the way that PS4 games could run better on Sony’s more powerful system. Well, it also describes the kind of backwards compatibility where the PS5 is already capable of its ability to play PS4 titles.
