When you become a host of a Zoom meeting or even become a participant, you will need a peaceful condition so that you can have a smooth meeting. However, sometimes the meeting through Zoom cannot happen as we want. There may be some distractions from some participants and it makes you want to mute them. If we are a host of a meeting, we can mute them. But, if we are a participant, can we mute them?
Muting Someone on Zoom as a Participant
If you are a participant of a Zoom meeting, you are not able to mute someone. This thing can only be done by the host. So, if you are the host of the meeting, you can mute someone, some of the participants or even all of them.
You are able to imagine that if participants can mute others, it may lead to the chaos meeting since the participants who are muted will be angry. However, if you need to mute someone because of some reasons, then you are able to tell it to the host so that they will mute the person or they will ask the person to mute himself/ herself. The host will ask everyone to mute or via the chat in Zoom.
Muting Someone on Zoom as a Host
If you are a host in a Zoom meeting, it is easy for you to mute or unmute someone or even all of the participants because you have the controls for it. If you are a host of a meeting on Zoom and you want to mute or unmute someone there, you are able to do that by following the steps below.

- The first thing that you have to do is to sign in to the Zoom desktop client.
- After that, you have to start a meeting there.
- Here, you have to click on the Participants button which can be found in the meeting controls.
- In this step, you have to hover a participant and then you have to click on one of these options:
- Ask to Unmute: It shows a prompt for the participant that asks them to unmute. The Unmute can be clicked by the participants in the prompt to unmute.
- Unmute: It will instantly unmute the participant without showing a prompt. However, it is important for you to know that this option can only be available if you enable pre-approved consent to be unmuted and the participant provided consent.
- Mute: It will mute the participant.
Muting All Participants on Zoom as a Host
As a host beside being able to mute someone, you are also able to mute all participants which are already in the meeting and the new participants which just joine the meeting. How to mute all participants? You are able to follow the steps below.
- The first thing that you have to do is to click on the Participants button which can be found in the meeting controls.
- Then, you have to click on Mute All.
- You have to click Mute All to be able to mute all current and new participants.
- Optionally, you are able to check Allow Participants to Unmute Themselves if you want the participants to be able to unmute at any time during the meeting.
How to Ask All Participants to Unmute?
If you are a host or a co-host of a meeting in zoom, you are able to request the participants in the meeting to unmute themselves. It will permit the participants to decide whether they are ready to be unmuted or want to remain muted. How to do that? You are able to follow the steps below.
- The first thing that you have to do is to sign in to the Zoom desktop client.
- After that, you have to start a meeting.
- Here, you need to click on the Participants button which can be found in the meeting controls.
- Then, you have to click on More and then click on the Ask All to Unmute from the list.
How to Enable Pre-Approved Consent to be Unmute
Enabling the Request Permission to Unmute participations option can be done by you as a host in a zoom meeting. It is displayed when scheduling a meeting. If you choose this option, it will show a prompt when participants join the meeting. The prompt will ask for permission to permit the host to mute or unmute them. It is important for you to know that permissions which are given will apply in all meetings scheduled by the same host.
If you want to enable the pre-approved consent to unmute feature for all users in the account, you are able to follow the steps below.

- The first thing that you have to do is to sign in to the Zoom web portal as an administrator with permission to edit account settings.
- Then, in the navigation menu, you have to click on the Account Management and then Account Settings.
- In the Meeting tab, you need to navigate to the Request permission to unmute option that you can find under the In Meeting (Advanced) section. And then, you can verify that the setting is enabled. It is important for you to know that if you disable the setting, you have to enable it by clicking on the toggle. If a verification dialog shows, then you have to select Turn On to verify the change.
- This step is optional. If you want to make this setting mandatory for all users in your account, you have to click on the lock icon. After that, you have to click on Lock to confirm the setting. It is important for you to know that users need to have client or app version 5.2.1 or higher to be able to see the option when scheduling.
