A new way to play the game of Among Us
Among Us took the world by storm with its addictive social deduction gameplay, memorial of party games like Mafia or Werewolf. The players have to work together and complete their tasks when they try to stay one step ahead of the Imposter lurking among them. Even, the game won Best Mobile Game and Best Multiplayer Game at the Game Awards 2020. Like all great indie games, finally they make their way to Nintendo’s hybrid handheld, the Nintendo Switch.
Now, Among Us is available to download on the Nintendo Switch, it was announced during December’s Indie World showcase. This case, of course result the question, is the Nintendo Switch version worth to download? Apparently, the answer is somewhat complicated. This is much the same game as it is on PC or mobile, but with some changes.
The Nintendo Switch version of Among Us marks the game’s first showing on a home console. The cheapest option is still on the Mobile version, where it is still free. Also, you are able to play with the players on other platforms as well, which is always a pretty bonus. But, you will need Nintendo Switch Online to get online. It is a multiplayer game after all.
On its surface, Among Us on Nintendo Switch looks identical to other versions, however the differences start to crop up once you start to play. Apparently, there are touch controls for the menu options if you are playing handheld, but control of your astronaut is regulated to your Joy-Cons or a Pro Controller. Also, there are no single Joy-Con options. In view of how simple Among Us is to play, we are surprised that some seemingly clear control schemes were removed.
The usage of controllers changes how easy or difficult several tasks. Now, the infamous Card Swipe task can be controlled by spinning the control stick. It is remarkably easier to complete. While other tasks like the Fix Wiring tasks, cannot be completed with touch controls at all and are more difficult to complete. The Touch screen control is able to be used to complete most tasks, if you are playing handheld, however are still easily completed with a button press most of the time. If we compare to the PC and mobile version, we feel that movement is much easier on the Nintendo Switch, and also doing something nearly complex, like killing someone and venting out the other end of the room, is much easier on the Nintendo Switch.
Among Us is a game where you have to argue, debate, collect clues, and shout accusations. Unfortunately, the Nintendo Switch version has no voice chat option, not unlike other versions, however the text option is slow, and those precious seconds typing out a response with your controller is able to make a huge difference in whether your crew keeps you around or sends you hurtling through space or into a volcano. Of course, communication is key to playing Among Us, and right now it is a bit clunky on the system. You are able to use the touch screen to type while playing in handheld mode, however it still pales in comparison to typing on your Mobile or your PC. If you are going to play with friends, it is worth jumping into a free Google Meet on your phone or computer to get around the Switch’s communication issues.
Is it worth to play Among Us game on Nintendo Switch version?
The Nintendo Switch version comes with pros and cons. However the biggest issue is that it is difficult to communicate, which puts Nintendo Switch players at a huge disadvantage once it comes to one of the most important parts of the game. Probably, it may be unfair to call the Nintendo Switch version the “worst” version, as it is mostly identical to its Mobile and PC counterparts in almost every other regard. It is only a shame that such an important part of the game has become super clunky on the system. So, no matter what version you select to play on, you are getting one of the best party games available on any system.
